Scores of militants in a key town in Western Ghouta have agreed to lay down their arms and turn themselves in to the Syrian government forces, the town’s officials said Tuesday.

“Based on an agreement between the Syrian army and residents of the town of al-Mo’adhamiyeh, the militants in the town have to lay down their arms and end fight against the government forces,” municipality’s officials said, adding, “The entire positions, built by the militants, will be ruined and the army will deploy forces inside the town.”

“This agreement will be materialized in the next few hours,” the municipality added.

Military sources said in mid-May, following the significant advances of the government forces East of Damascus, tens of militants laid down their arms and turned themselves in to the Syrian officials.

“Dozens of the Takfiri terrorists in Zabdean region surrendered to the Syrian government as the forces loyal to the Syrian President Bashar Assad continue gaining ground across Eastern Ghouta,” the sources said.

A report said at the time that the Syrian army managed to seize back over a dozen villages in heavy clashes with the Takfiri terrorists in Eastern Ghouta.

A sum of 13 villages covering an area of 40 square kilometers is now under the Syrian army’s control, battlefield sources announced.

The Takfiri terrorists of Ahrar al-Sham, Faylaq al-Rahman and Jeish al-Islam were driven back by the Syrian army from Bayadh Shaba’a, Zabdean, Harasta al-Qantara, Bazina, Deir al-Assafir, Arz al-Nahasiya, Hosh al-Homsi, al-Rakabiyeh, Arz al-Shartout, Arz al-Kasar, al-Azodiya, Nouleh and Bala al-Qadima.
