According to Russia’s state media, citing the country’s Investigative Committee, an unidentified gunman broke into a school in the city of Izhevsk in the Udmurtia region, opening fire at students, teachers, and security guards.
News agency RIA cited Governor Alexander Brechalov of the Udmurtia region as saying that there were dead and wounded among the school students.
One of the victims was identified as the school’s security guard. “A tragedy happened in Udmurtia today,” Berchalov told journalists.
According to the governor and local police, the gunman shot himself after going on the killing spree.
The school has been evacuated and the area around it has been fenced off, reports said, without giving any details about the identity of the gunman and his motives.
Footage from the scene showed students and teachers running from the building, as well as victims being carried to ambulances on stretchers.
The school has about 1,000 students in the city of Izhevsk, a city of 640,000 population, located in central Russia, about 960 kilometers east of Moscow.
Last year, a shooting by a teenage gunman in a school in Kazan led to the death of seven children and two adults.
In another attack last April, a man killed two children and a teacher at a kindergarten in the central Ulyanovsk region before committing suicide.
