International airport in Syria’s Aleppo disabled after new Israeli airstrike
The international airport in the northwestern city of Aleppo in Syria has been targeted by Israeli airstrikes, according to reports.
As per Syrian media reports, a military source stated that the Israeli airstrike on Tuesday originated from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Latakia city. The airstrike caused damage only to the runway of Aleppo International Airport, and it is no longer operational.
Earlier reports from Syrian media claimed that the country’s air defense systems had intercepted a series of Israeli missiles, which were launched from the Mediterranean direction, and managed to shoot down several of them.
The international airport in Aleppo serves as one of the main entry points for foreign aircraft carrying humanitarian aid to those affected by Syria’s recent devastating earthquake. The Israeli strike on the airport is the latest in a series of attacks, including one in February where residential buildings in the Kafr Sousa neighborhood of central Damascus and Tal al-Masih near the city of Shahba were targeted. According to the Syrian Health Ministry, the February attack resulted in the deaths of five people, including one soldier, and injured fifteen others, some critically.
The Israeli government is accused of violating Syrian sovereignty on a regular basis by targeting military bases within the country, particularly those of the Hezbollah resistance movement, which has assisted the Syrian military in its struggle against foreign-supported militants.
Since the start of the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria in 2011, the Tel Aviv government has been a major supporter of terrorist groups fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s administration.
Syria has frequently voiced concerns to the UN about Israeli attacks, calling on the Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s offenses, but these requests have gone unheeded.
