Iran FM: Syria undergoing a challenging period due to threats posed by terrorist groups and aggressive actions from US-‘israel’
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has stated that Syria is undergoing a significant challenge, emphasizing the looming threats from terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda and Daesh along with aggression from Israeli and US forces.
In a commentary published by the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar on Saturday, Araghchi highlighted the challenges confronting Syria, citing the intensified threat from terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda and Daesh. He expressed concern over the potential for these groups to establish Syria as a secure base, thereby exacerbating regional instability.
He stated that the “aggressions and military interventions” conducted by the Zionist regime, the United States, and their regional allies have posed considerable challenges.
Araghchi described the interventions as “irreparable strategic miscalculations,” suggesting that these actions reveal the underlying objectives driving them.
He stated that the unequivocal aim of these aggressions and interventions is to dismantle Syria’s social structures, erode its scientific resources, undermine its economic infrastructure, and diminish its defensive capabilities.
He stated that there is undeniable concern within the Islamic world regarding the future of the West Asian region, in light of the prevailing situation in the Levant and Palestine.
Araghchi remarked that despite the significant challenges and impacts brought about by foreign military invasions in Syria, there remains a resilient spirit among the people in the region. Highlighting the bravery and heroism of the residents in the Jabalia camp, Araghchi noted their steadfast resistance against two months of ground and aerial attacks by the Zionist forces, armed with nothing but their unwavering spirit and faith.
The minister addressed the widening scope of what he described as the Israeli regime’s “barbaric crimes,” noting that these activities have extended into Syria, beginning in the aftermath of the Assad government’s fall.
In his statement, he posed the inquiry: “Who bears responsibility for Israel’s encroachment on the territory of a nation grappling with the internal challenges posed by the transition between governments?”
Araghchi issued a rebuke to regional nations, criticizing their statements of regret and concern as “the most meaningless rhetoric employed by numerous states accountable for influencing the destiny of the West Asian populace.”
For more than 75 years, he stated, resistance has remained “the sole viable option for the children of this region in confronting the blatant aggression of the Zionist regime and the explicit backing by certain states for the continued atrocities.”
The Iranian Foreign Minister has put forward a proposal for “free elections” as a potential resolution to the ongoing deadlock.
He stated that resolving the current deadlock and maintaining the independence, pride, and dignity of the Syrian nation depends on preserving unity and promoting coexistence among citizens. This can be achieved through free elections, enabling all societal segments to shape the country’s future.
He emphasized that genuine respect for the electorate is achieved through conducting free and fair elections that accurately reflect the aspirations of the Syrian populace, paving the way for a political system that encompasses all societal groups.
