Iranian Navy set to acquire the advanced indigenous combat destroyer, Zagros, described as ‘unique’ in its capabilities

Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, Commander of the Iranian Navy, has announced that a "unique" domestically-built destroyer named Zagros is poised to be incorporated into the naval fleet and will soon set sail.

On Monday, Irani announced the upcoming deployment of the Zagros, an innovative military vessel developed with Iranian expertise and capabilities. The vessel, notable for its distinctive features, is set to commence operations in the region this week.

The Zagros destroyer, the latest and most technologically advanced addition to the Navy’s fleet, has been engineered for dual roles encompassing both combat and intelligence-gathering operations.

Irani announced that the nation’s largest military facility is set to be inaugurated this week in the strategically significant region of Jask. He highlighted that the installation will include specialized docking stations equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Highlighting the exceptional standards of Iran’s vessel manufacturing sector, he stated that the 86th fleet of the Iranian Navy successfully navigated numerous challenges, thereby demonstrating the maritime prowess of the Islamic Republic to global powers and laying the groundwork for harnessing the blue economy.

In another part of his speech, Irani lauded the contributions of knowledge-based firms and scientists in the realm of shipbuilding and the advancement of maritime industries. He stated, “Through your expertise, you have challenged the concept of American exceptionalism in maritime domains, demonstrating that these regions are the collective property of all nations.”

Highlighting the strategic presence of Iran’s naval forces in international waters, he remarked, “Iran’s Navy has now attained a level of power that prompts other nations to seek collaboration and leverage our capacity and capabilities.”

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has attained self-reliance in the production of surface and underwater vessels. Additionally, it has expanded its operations into international waters, aiming to safeguard maritime routes and ensure the security of commercial ships and oil tankers.

Over recent years, the Iranian Navy has conducted a series of joint military exercises with various nations, such as Russia, China, and Pakistan, aimed at enhancing their combat preparedness.

The parties have actively collaborated in initiatives targeting the mitigation of piracy and maritime terrorism. They have engaged in the exchange of information pertinent to naval rescue and disaster relief operations while also sharing operational and tactical expertise. These efforts are designed to strengthen the security and stability of international maritime trade.
