A building collapse in Konya, Turkey, results in two fatalities
A four-story residential building in the central province of Konya experienced a structural collapse at approximately 8 p.m. local time on January 24.
In a recent development, rescue teams successfully extracted three individuals alive from beneath the debris, while two other individuals were discovered deceased.
The Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has announced that four individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the recent building collapse.
Among those detained were K.Ü. and their employee, K.G., who operate a fish restaurant on the ground floor of the premises. They are accused of allegedly modifying the structural columns to enlarge their dining area. Additionally, K.D. and R.Ç., proprietors of neighboring establishments, were also taken into custody.
In a dramatic rescue operation, 24-year-old Mohammed Jadan and 55-year-old Khaled al-Jadan were pulled from the rubble five hours after a building collapse. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Ahmet Muhammed Cedan was successfully rescued after enduring nine hours trapped beneath the debris.
Emine Mustafa and her husband, Turki Muhammed, were discovered deceased on January 25.
Muhammed Hasan, a 21-year-old eyewitness who captured footage of the collapse, recounted the incident to the state-affiliated news agency, Anadolu.
According to an eyewitness account, ominous crackling noises were heard emanating from the walls of a building, prompting immediate concern. Upon investigation, the sounds grew louder, suggesting structural instability. The situation quickly escalated as doors began to jam, signaling a partial failure of the building’s structure. Recognizing the imminent threat, the eyewitness urged immediate evacuation. As alarms were sounded to alert residents, individuals began to evacuate. Shortly thereafter, the building succumbed to the growing structural pressure and subsequently collapsed.
He expressed his surprise, stating that he had not anticipated the sudden collapse of the building.
