Sent to hell: Individual responsible for Qur’an desecration found fatally shot at residence in Sweden

An Iraqi immigrant, known for his controversial acts of desecrating the Holy Qur'an, which sparked outrage among both Muslim and non-Muslim communities globally, has been found dead in his residence near Stockholm, Sweden’s capital.

Swedish public broadcaster SVT announced on Thursday that Salwan Momika, aged 38, was discovered deceased in his Sodertalje apartment following a shooting incident.

Authorities have reported an incident involving a fatal shooting that occurred overnight. A man was discovered suffering from gunshot injuries and subsequently succumbed to his wounds at a nearby hospital. In response, a preliminary murder investigation has been initiated by local law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the deceased as Momika, prompting the initiation of a murder investigation.

Prosecutor Rasmus Öman informed Swedish news agency TT that authorities have detained multiple individuals in connection with the case, though details remain undisclosed.

The Stockholm District Court announced that the expected verdict on Thursday in the trial involving Momika has been delayed due to the death of one of the defendants.

Göran Lundahl, a judge at the court, has officially confirmed that the individual who passed away was identified as Momika.

Momika and a co-defendant have been formally charged by a Stockholm court with incitement to racial hatred. These charges stem from statements allegedly made during events involving the burning of the Qur’an.

In 2023, a 38-year-old individual orchestrated multiple acts of burning and desecrating Islam’s sacred text in Sweden, sparking widespread outrage. The incidents were captured on video and circulated globally, drawing significant criticism and anger from Muslim countries and resulting in disturbances and unrest in various regions.

In 2023, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry issued a formal request to Sweden for the extradition of an Iraqi national, seeking to have the individual stand trial under Iraqi legal jurisdiction.

The Ministry underscored that Momika’s reprehensible actions, deemed an affront to religious principles, have deeply affected the sentiments of Muslims globally.

In recent years, Sweden has consistently allowed the burning of the Qur’an to take place without intervention.
