Deir Ezzor: ISIS Sustains Heavy Casualties Attacking Al-Jafra
Following their midnight attack on the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) stormed the Al-Jafra Quarter and attempted to infiltrate the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses – they were repelled after sustaining significant casualties. ISIS militants have besieged the Al-Jafra Quarter for ten (10) straight days; however, they have been unable to progress farther than the Al-Jafra Preliminary School.
In the nearby Al-Mari’iyyah Quarter, the SAA’s 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard – backed by the 137th Brigade of the 17th Division and National Defense Forces (NDF) – have countered the ISIS advance near the water tower, killing scores of militants and recapturing a number of building blocks. According to a military source in the 104th Brigade, the SAA is now in control of 70 percent of the Al-Mari’iyyah Quarter, leaving only the southeast perimeter under ISIS control.
ISIS militants launched another attack on the Deir Ezzor Military Airport around 8 A.M. Damascus Time on Friday after their failed attempt to breakthrough SAA defenses last night.
