Chinese hackers infiltrated the sanctions department of the US Treasury

Reports emerged early this week indicating that Chinese hackers have allegedly launched a cyberattack on the US Treasury Department's sanctions office, US media outlets have revealed.

According to a report by the Washington Post, which references unidentified U.S. officials, cybercriminals have breached the Offices of Foreign Assets Control and Financial Research. The article further alleges that the hackers also aimed their attacks at the office of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

According to information from sources, the Chinese government is reportedly focused on determining which entities the United States might aim to target with financial sanctions.

The US Treasury Department has informed lawmakers through a letter that it suffered a cybersecurity breach allegedly orchestrated by Chinese state-sponsored hackers in December. The incident, which reportedly involved the theft of documents, was characterized by the department as a “major incident,” according to a Monday report by Reuters.
