Homs Governor Talal al-Barazi underlined that full security has been restored to almost the entire city of Homs in Western Syria, and said UN Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has confirmed the same after his recent visit to city.
“We explained to Mistura that except for 1.2 percent of the entire 380 square kilometers area of Homs city, the remaining is under the control of the government,” al-Barazi told FNA on Wednesday.

He reiterated that the UN envoy has voiced his satisfaction in restoration of security to 36 regions out of the total 37 and that the people of the city are living a normal life in there.

Homs is a city in Western Syria and the capital of the Homs Governorate. It is located 162 kilometers to the North of Damascus.

De Mistura arrived in Damascus on Monday and he has already visited many parts of Syria so far.

In July, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Mistura as the new special envoy tasked with seeking a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs and terrorists against both the army and civilians.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.
