Iran announced its commitment to sustaining support for Syria until terrorist forces are completely defeated
Iran's permanent ambassador to the United Nations has voiced Tehran's profound apprehension regarding the reemergence of terrorism in Syria. He reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Islamic Republic to support the Arab nation in its battle against Takfiri extremist groups.
In a recent emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council focused on Syria, Amir Saeid Iravani reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Syrian government and its citizens in their resolute battle against terrorism. Iravani emphasized Iran’s full endorsement of Syria’s sovereign right to eradicate terrorist organizations such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which are known for causing extensive devastation, instability, and suffering in their areas of operation.
An Iranian diplomat has reiterated the necessity for all anti-terrorism initiatives to be conducted in collaboration with and with the approval of the Syrian government, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Iravani highlighted Iran’s recent proactive diplomatic efforts with its Astana process partners and the Syrian government, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to these engagements.
In January 2017, Iran and Russia, both staunch supporters of the Syrian government, alongside Turkey, which supports opposition forces, initiated the Astana peace process. This diplomatic effort aimed to resolve the Syrian conflict by engaging both the Damascus government and its opposition in dialogue.
Iran has urged for an urgent assembly of foreign ministers participating in the Astana process to discuss the latest events unfolding in Syria, with the objective of formulating a cohesive strategy to curb terrorist operations in the region, according to Iravani.
The Iranian UN envoy has spoken out about the recent increase in terrorist activities in Syria, highlighting that coordinated attacks by HTS militants have severely threatened the nation’s sovereignty and stability.
Iravani stated that the scope and complexity of HTS’s operations, characterized by the use of advanced weaponry and drones, indicate intentional external assistance, chiefly from the United States. He argued that Washington has weaponized terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy to further its political objectives.
He stated that those responsible for perpetuating the conflict must be held accountable for their actions and the severe consequences suffered by the Syrian population.
An Iranian diplomat has asserted that Israel’s intensified airstrikes targeting civilians and vital infrastructure in Syria, along with the regime’s alleged links to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), suggest a concerted effort to exacerbate instability in the country.
Iravani highlighted the recent events in Aleppo and Idlib as a critical alert for the region about the resurgence of terrorism and extremism. He warned that the instability and proliferation of terrorism and violent extremism in Syria are not isolated threats, but rather ones that will inevitably extend beyond its borders, posing a risk to the wider region and potentially on an international scale.
