Iran announces its preparedness to reopen its embassy in Syria and engages in discussions with Damascus
The Iranian government has announced its willingness to reopen its embassy in Damascus, signaling diplomatic support as Syria faces ongoing challenges following the recent takeover by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, Mohajerani announced that Iran intends to address the issue via diplomatic avenues.
She stated that their approach to reopening embassies remains firmly anchored in diplomacy, emphasizing their preparedness for such actions.
She further stated that both parties are ready and are actively involved in diplomatic discussions aimed at reopening their embassies.
Following the takeover of Syria by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants on December 8, ending Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year presidency, the nation remains beset by substantial challenges both domestically and internationally.
The stability and future of Syria are under significant threat due to multiple factors, including Israel’s contentious occupation of Syrian land, which is perceived as part of its broader expansionist agenda. Additionally, the continued presence of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern regions of Syria further complicates the nation’s security landscape.
Further complications arise from human rights abuses committed against minority groups by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants, coupled with mounting humanitarian crises, including the deteriorating food security situation in Syria.
Mohajerani, mirroring earlier remarks by Iranian representatives, emphasized the significance of establishing a Syrian government grounded in the democratic will of its populace, identifying this as a primary concern for Tehran.
The official emphasized that Iran regards the protection of Syria’s territorial integrity as a matter of paramount importance.
A major area of concern, she highlighted, is the prevention of terrorism’s rise and spread, which continues to have substantial implications for Syria and the wider region.
A spokesperson emphasized that Iran’s primary aim is to safeguard Syria from the detrimental impacts of terrorism, while also ensuring the security and stability of neighboring nations remain intact.
In a weekly press briefing held in Tehran on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He declared that the Syrian populace possesses the sole authority to determine their future without external intervention.
Baqaei emphasized the importance of preventing Syria from becoming a hub for terrorism, urging countries to acknowledge the possible ramifications of regional unrest. He noted that instability within one nation could quickly extend to neighboring states, underscoring the need for collective vigilance.
He further emphasized that the ongoing deployment of U.S. military forces in Syria poses a challenge to the protection of the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He called on all countries invested in Syria’s future to establish a definitive stance on the situation.
