Iran demands removal of ‘israel’ from UN, citing accusations of criminal actions and aggressive behavior
Iran has urged the United Nations to reevaluate Israel's membership, citing alleged violations of international law amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which Tehran describes as genocidal.
During the 10th Emergency Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly addressing illegal Israeli actions in occupied Palestine, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, delivered a statement on Wednesday.
In a statement, he accused Israel of willfully ignoring United Nations resolutions that mandate the cessation of its occupation of Palestinian territories, halt settlement expansions, cease discriminatory practices against Palestinians, and facilitate their return to their homeland.
He stated that Israel’s repeated breaches of international law, encompassing human rights and humanitarian law violations, pose a significant threat to global peace and security.
The situation has been characterized as a systematic failure by the Israeli regime to fulfill its obligations as a United Nations member. There is a call for the international community to reassess Israel’s membership status due to its alleged illegal activities, as outlined in Article 6 of the UN Charter.
Iravani highlighted that reevaluating Israel’s membership in the United Nations could facilitate the enforcement of international resolutions and hasten the achievement of Palestinians’ rights to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state.
He additionally criticized Israel for failing to adhere to United Nations resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in what he described as the regime’s genocidal conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The Iranian envoy has accused Israel of advancing apartheid policies and engaging in serious offenses, including violence, aggression, mass killings, widespread displacement, extensive detention, and severe starvation. The envoy described these actions as having a level of brutality “unseen in human history.”
The speaker accused Israel of perpetuating conflict and instability beyond Palestinian territories, alleging that the nation has attempted to extend acts of war and aggression into Syria, Lebanon, and Iran.
In the meantime, he urged the United Nations Security Council to promptly address Israel’s actions against Syria, as well as the expansion of Israeli occupation, which he claims violates the 1974 disengagement agreement.
Iravani stated that despite numerous alleged offenses attributed to Israeli authorities, they continue to operate with complete impunity. This situation is sustained by the steadfast backing of certain nations and the inaction of the United Nations Security Council, exemplified by the United States’ veto in November.
He was alluding to the draft resolution put forth by the United Nations Security Council, which called for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” in the Gaza region.
On November 20, 2024, a document garnered 14 affirmative votes in the 15-member council, only to be vetoed by the United States. This marks the fourth instance in which Washington has exercised its veto power amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, aiming to protect its ally, Israel.
Iravani condemned the veto as “disgraceful,” suggesting it functions as a “license granted by the United States” for the “occupying regime” to persist in its actions and violence in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.
