Iran set to organize Quds Day rallies on the final Friday of Ramadan

Traditionally marked on the final Friday of Ramadan, the event serves as a platform to denounce Israeli actions and advocate for Palestinian rights.

During a press conference held on Wednesday, Ramadan Sharif, the head of Iran’s Central Committee for the Intifada and Quds Day, unveiled the upcoming plans for the organization’s initiatives.

Demonstrations are scheduled to occur throughout Iran and in various nations globally, providing a venue to condemn actions by Israel and express continued support for the Palestinian cause. The focal theme for this year is “Al-al-Ahd Ya Quds” (On the Pledge, O Quds).

In Tehran, a march is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m., originating from ten specified routes and culminating at the University of Tehran, the location of the weekly Friday prayers. The event is set to feature a diverse assembly of participants spanning various social strata, including clergy, students, and governmental representatives.

Quds Day, inaugurated in 1979 by Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, is commemorated worldwide as a day of unity and support for Palestine. In a call to action, Imam Khomeini invited Muslims globally to dedicate the final Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as Al-Quds Day, urging the international community of Muslims to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.

Since the 2008-2009 conflict in Gaza, efforts to curtail Quds Day activities have increased. Despite this, global solidarity with the Palestinian cause has strengthened, resulting in Quds Day being marked in more than 80 nations worldwide. Among these are the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Greece.

Pro-Israel groups have voiced concerns over Quds Day demonstrations, arguing that these gatherings encourage extremism and antisemitism. In contrast, event organizers assert that the day serves as a peaceful platform advocating for Palestinian rights and protesting against alleged Israeli atrocities, including genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
