Iran urges UN Security Council to intervene in halting ‘israel’s’ actions against Syria
Iran's leading human rights representative has urged the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action to halt Israel's military actions in Syria and to hold the occupying regime responsible for its violations, following the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad.
Iran’s leading human rights representative has urged the United Nations Security Council to intervene in halting Israel’s aggressive actions towards Syria and to ensure that the occupying regime is held responsible for its alleged offenses in the aftermath of President Bashar al-Assad’s fall.
Kazem Gharibabadi, the Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, highlighted key points while speaking at the Group of Friends of Neutrality for Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development conference held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on Wednesday.
He issued a strong condemnation of the recent military strikes conducted by the Israeli forces against Syria, as well as the ongoing occupation of further territories within the nation.
Gharibabadi characterized these measures as additional proof of what he sees as Israel’s aggressive and expansionist policies, highlighting a blatant disregard for international norms and laws. He urged the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to take decisive action to stop these actions and hold Israel accountable for its alleged violations.
Since the collapse of the Assad administration, Israel has conducted nearly 500 airstrikes throughout Syria, primarily aiming at vital civilian and military infrastructure. Additionally, Israeli forces have advanced into a designated buffer zone, contravening the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.
Israel has deployed military forces into a buffer zone located east of the contested Golan Heights, while maintaining that its troops have not advanced towards Damascus, affirming their current stationing within the demarcated zone. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has attributed the recent developments in Syria to a “collaborative American and Zionist scheme,” additionally noting the involvement of a neighboring nation in the situation.
Kazem Gharibabadi, who holds the position of Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs of Iran, reiterated Tehran’s committed position on upholding Syria’s unity, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He emphasized that determining Syria’s destiny and charting its future remains an exclusive prerogative of the Syrian population.
He stated that reaching this objective necessitates a rapid resolution of military conflicts, the prevention of terrorist activities, and the commencement of a national dialogue that includes all sectors of Syrian society, aimed at forming an inclusive government that represents the entire population of Syria.
Gharibabadi reiterated Iran’s dedication to supporting Syria in achieving peace and stability, emphasizing ongoing consultations with regional stakeholders to further this objective.
Turkmenistan has spearheaded the formation of the “Group of Friends of Neutrality for Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development” at the United Nations. This initiative has garnered the participation of 25 countries so far.
