Iranian president calls for implementation of security deal with Iraq
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for the full implementation of the security deal between Iran and Iraq to confront terrorists and enemies who have targeted the region’s stability and security.
In a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani in Baghdad on Wednesday, Pezeshkian described their meeting as “very good” and emphasized the importance of addressing the weaknesses of previous agreements.
“This trip is a great opportunity to share our views and take the next steps within the framework of signed agreements and understandings. Specialized committees will be formed to implement these agreements.”
Pezeshkian said that 14 memoranda of understanding were signed between Iran and Iraq, marking the beginning of expanded cooperation.
“We will adhere to the agreements and will strongly pursue them in Iran until they are implemented,” he said.
The Iranian president highlighted that Iran-Iraq cooperation to combat Daesh terrorism and smuggling will increase.
He also noted that they discussed the geopolitical conditions of the two countries.
“The two countries are the connecting point between Europe and Asia. The two sides discussed forming a committee of experts and strategic long-term plans to enhance cooperation.”
Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of unity, saying, “If we stand together, we will prevent falling into the fire; we seek an independent, sovereign, and secure Iraq. We emphasize sincerity, friendship, brotherhood, and prosperity in this country.”
‘Gazans not terrorists’
Pezeshkian also addressed regional developments, condemning the genocide in Gaza and criticizing the Zionist regime and its supporters.
“The crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza reveal the falsehood of Western countries and international organizations regarding human rights,” he said.
President Pezeshkian said the Zionist regime calls any Palestinian who seeks to defend themselves a terrorist.
He condemned the regime’s actions against women, children, and the elderly, and its targeting of schools, educational institutions, and hospitals with American and European bombs.
‘Iraq mustn’t be used against Iran’
Prime Minister Al Sudani described relations between Tehran and Baghdad as deep and longstanding, stating that the proximity of Iran and Iraq can enhance their relations.
“The relations between Iran and Iraq are deep and longstanding, and they are ongoing in various fields,” he said. “The proximity of Iran and Iraq can also become a path for expanding our relations.”
Foreign Minister Araqchi said both countries are on the right track to effectively manage borders and combat sabotage groups.
Al Sudani highlighted the establishment of three border industrial areas in the provinces of Maysan, Jizan, and Basra, and an economic city, which will significantly contribute to the expansion of ties.
“We reviewed the actions and activities of capable and powerful Iranian companies, especially those active in infrastructure. The more these partnerships increase, the more they will impact regional stability.”
He expressed gratitude to Iran for participating in the gas export agreement between Turkmenistan and Iraq.
On the security situation, Al Sudani said Iraq’s soil must not be used to threaten Iran.
He reiterated that they oppose the expansion of tension and conflict against the sovereignty of countries and called on the international community to fulfill its legal and ethical responsibilities.
