Iraqi Kata’ib Hezbollah urges government to send military forces to Syria
A prominent Iraqi counter-terrorism organization has called on the Iraqi government to deploy military forces to Syria in support of the Damascus leadership, amid a recent escalation in terrorist activities in northwestern Syria. The group emphasized the need to assist in combating foreign-backed Takfiri militants destabilizing the region.
The Hezbollah Brigades, known as Kata’ib Hezbollah, issued an appeal via Telegram on Tuesday, amidst rising concerns about the potential spillover of the Syrian conflict into surrounding regions.
A spokesperson for the group stated that they advocate for the Iraqi government to proactively deploy regular military forces in collaboration with the Syrian government, citing concerns that these groups pose a threat to Iraq’s national security and regional stability.
The spokesperson stated that the organization is “carefully observing the acts of criminal aggression against the Syrian populace,” and mentioned that a decision has not been made regarding the deployment of its fighters to Syria.
The chairman of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), or Hashd al-Sha’abi in Arabic, has issued a warning regarding the situation in Syria, stating that developments there have a direct impact on Iraq’s national security.
Fayyadh announced that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has ordered a bolstered presence and reinforcement of military units on the frontlines. The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) have been identified as a crucial component in the defense of Iraq, particularly along the Syrian border.
He emphasized that Israel aims to assert its dominance in the region through military conflict and armaments, asserting that Syrian defense systems have been targeted by attacks from the occupying forces.
The leader of the Popular Mobilization Forces stated that the Syrian military has been affected by assaults from Israel, enduring a protracted conflict, facing sanctions, and dealing with diverse political interests within Syria.
Foreign-supported militants associated with the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) extremist faction initiated a significant offensive in Syria’s Aleppo and Idlib provinces on Wednesday, capturing multiple territories.
Subsequent to those events, Syrian government forces have been embroiled in intense combat operations against terrorist factions in an effort to reclaim lost territories.
Militant groups are actively attempting to disrupt the Syrian government’s initiatives to enhance security and stability within the nation, while the country also faces regular military actions from Israel.
Since the outbreak of foreign-supported conflict in Syria in March 2011, Israel has been a predominant backer of opposition groups challenging the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad.
