PM: Iraq’s armed forces prepared to address any possible acts of aggression
On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani reiterated that the nation's military and security forces are prepared to counter any possible acts of aggression.
During a memorial ceremony in Baghdad marking the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, the former Quds Force Commander, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the former Deputy Head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, al-Sudani declared, “We have effectively navigated Iraq away from conflict and the threatening brink of regional turmoil.”
In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
Both figures are widely recognized as pivotal in Iraq’s battle against ISIL, often hailed by their supporters as the “Victory Leaders.”
