Syrian troops are approaching the mountain resort of al-Zabadani, which has been under militant control for two years, cutting it off from militant-held areas in the mountainous Qalamoun region, state TV said on Friday.
Syrian forces have systematically captured most of the militant-held towns along the mountainous frontier since launching an offensive in the region in November.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey – are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
