Syria election can help restore peace, security: Iran MP
A senior Iranian lawmaker says the upcoming presidential election in Syria can contribute to the restoration of peace and security in the crisis-hit state.
Chairman of National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Majlis Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks during a meeting with a number of foreign ambassadors to Iran in the capital Tehran on Saturday.
“In the current circumstances, holding elections in Syria as a political solution and non-interference of foreigners in the affairs of this country can be effective in paving the way to the return of peace and security to Syria,” he said.
With Syria in its fourth year of conflict, and the world being witness to the evil acts of terrorists and their sponsors, Boroujerdi added, “the necessity for the adoption of a Syrian political solution, as was stressed by the Islamic Republic from the beginning [of the crisis], is felt ever more than before.”
During the meeting, Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud appreciated Iran’s support for the Syrian nation and government, adding, “Referring to the public vote in the upcoming election in Syria and the participation of all Syrian groups are the only means to end the violence in the country.”
Ambassadors and representatives from Syria, Palestine, Algeria, Russia, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, North Korea, Mauritania, Yemen, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Vietnam and Ghana were present in the meeting.
Officials from the United Nations office in Tehran and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) were also among the attendees of the meeting.
Syria will hold presidential election on June 3. The Syrian government says it would hold the vote despite the foreign-backed militancy that has plagued the Arab country for more than three years.
The Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
