Syrian Army on the verge of entering Deir Ezzor from Raqqa
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) progressed more than 30km through the Al-Raqqa Governorate’s eastern countryside on Friday, putting them in position to enter the Deir Ezzor Governorate from its northwestern axis.
Led by the Tiger Forces, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies from nearby tribes began the assault on Friday by surprising the Islamic State (ISIL) with an attack on their positions east of Resafa.
Unprepared and lacking manpower, the Islamic State forces were unable to hold their ground in the southeastern countryside of Al-Raqqa, resulting in their mass retreat across the province on Friday morning.
With the Syrian Army now on the cusp of entering Deir Ezzor, the Islamic State will find themselves in a world of trouble with another government unit quickly advancing on their last east Homs stronghold (Al-Sukhnah).
