Syrian Army troops in southern Damascus to head new offensive in Daraa, Quneitra
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) troops in southern Damascus will head the upcoming Dara’a Governorate offensive, a military source told Al-Masdar News on Friday evening.
Led by units of the 4th Mechanized Division and Republican Guard, the Syrian military has spent much of the month liberating the Islamic State (ISIS) held areas in southern Damascus.
However, with ISIS on their last legs in both the Yarmouk Camp and Hajar Al-Aswad, the Syrian Arab Army has begun shifting their attention to the southern province of Syria.
Among the targets for the Syrian Arab Army’s upcoming offensive are the Dara’a and Al-Quneitra governorates, which currently have a large presence of rebels and jihadists.
In addition to the Republican Guard and 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Army’s 5th, 7th, and 9th divisions will also be taking part in this long-awaited offensive.
With the recent collapse of peace talks with the rebel forces in the Dara’a Governorate, the Syrian Army has made southern Syria their top priority this Summer.
