UNESCO inscribes St. Hilarion Monastery in Gaza on the List of World Heritage in Danger
Paris, SANA- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced Friday inscripting of Saint Hilarion Monastery in Gaza Strip on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
UNESCO wrote on its website that the ruins of St. Hilarion’s Monastery “Tell Umm Amer, located on the hills of Nuseirat coast, are among the oldest monasteries sites in the Middle East dating back to the fourth century”, AFP reported.
Lazare Eloundou Assomo Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre said that the request was made by Palestine, which considers resorting to UNESCO the only refuge to protect the site from destruction in the current circumstances .
Since the 7th of last October, the Israeli occupation entity has launched a wide aggression on Gaza Strip, causing the death of 39,177 Palestinians, the almost of them were women and children, and 90,403 wounded, and the aggression caused the destruction of residential neighborhoods and infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, government institutions and others.
