US seeking Syria-style policy in Iraq: Iran official
The United States seeks to pursue a Syria-style policy in Iraq by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), says an Iranian official.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Wednesday that Washington wants to step in the same path in Iraq as it did in Syria, and it will not relinquish its double standard policies in the Middle East region.
The Iranian official also stated that Iraqi armed forces together with fighters from Iraq’s Shia, Kurdish and Sunni communities will undoubtedly terminate terrorism in Iraq.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister added that no prudent Iraqi or regional party would side with the ISIL.
“(Iraqi) Kurds have been geographically besieged by the ISIL, and they cannot stop viewing the terrorist group a serious threat,” Amir-Abdollahian stated.
The top Iranian official concluded that those who cooperate with Takfiri terrorists do not have a correct understanding of the notion of security.
The ISIL is an al-Qaeda splinter terrorist group that is fighting the government of Syria and Iraq.
On June 10, the ISIL militants took control of the city of Mosul, the capital of Iraq’s Nineveh Province. The militants later took control of the city of Tikrit, located about 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad.
Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people have been forced out of their homes ever since.
