Venezuela severs diplomatic relations with Paraguay
In a diplomatic rift, Venezuela has severed its ties with Paraguay following Paraguay's endorsement of the Venezuelan opposition, which claims victory in Venezuela's presidential elections.
On Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared the termination of diplomatic relations with Paraguay following President Santiago Pena’s expression of support for Edmundo Gonzalez, an exiled political figure, as the legitimate victor of last year’s Venezuelan elections.
In a decisive move, Pena reaffirmed his backing of Gonzalez and issued a directive for Venezuelan diplomats stationed in his nation to vacate within a 48-hour period.
In a statement posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, he emphasized their commitment to collaborate with the international community. Their aim is not only to acknowledge Gonzalez’s victory but also to assist in expediting the restoration of democratic governance in Venezuela.
A Venezuelan political figure has announced a purported victory in the recent polls, providing alleged specifics of the vote counts to support the claim.
Nicolás Maduro has been officially declared the victor by both the electoral authority and the nation’s highest court, paving the way for his inauguration for a third presidential term scheduled for Friday.
He ascended to the presidency after the passing of his mentor, Hugo Chavez, in 2013, and secured re-election in 2018, despite facing opposition movements reportedly backed by the United States.
