New footage coming out of Syria shows foreign-backed militants fighting against the Syrian government with US-made anti-tank missiles.
In the videos, which were recently posted online, TOW anti-tank rockets could be seen in the hands of militants from the Hazm movement.
A former member of the group, identified as Samer Muhammad, said the missiles were provided by the Americans.
An unnamed militant source also said on Tuesday that members of the Hazm movement “have for the first time received more than 20 TOW anti-tank missiles from a Western source.” However, the source did not specify who had supplied the rockets.
“More have been promised, should it be proven that the missiles are being used in an effective way,” the source said.
The foreign-backed militants are said to have been trained with “international assistance in the use of these missiles” which have been used in flashpoint areas of Syria’s Idlib, Aleppo and Latakia provinces.
On April 7, Israel’s Debkafile website reported that two Syrian militant groups have been supplied with advanced US weapons, including armor-piercing, optically-guided BGM-71 TOW missiles, thanks to the Pentagon.
According to the Debkafile’s report, the US Joint Chiefs of Staff recently told Israeli officials that Saudi Arabia’s fighter jets would provide air cover as American forces move the weapons into southern Syria.
Last month, the US media reported that US President Barack Obama and Saudi King Abdullah appeared to narrow their disagreement on assisting Syrian militants.
Foreign-sponsored Takfiri groups have been behind many of deadly bomb attacks targeting both civilians and government institutions across the Arab country over the past three years.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
